Chapter 44 - "I'm Giving You One Last Chance"

Chapter 44: “I’m Giving You One Last Chance”

Despite its formidable defences, the Moon-Devouring Emperor was ultimately no match for the devastating might of the Empty Bright and Illusory Void Sword. Each blade pierced through its body as easily as paper, leaving it riddled with holes.

But the most terrifying aspect of the attack was that the swords didn’t simply stop after the first impact. Instead, they reversed course, retracing their paths and inflicting a second wave of damage before returning to the colossal sword wheel above.

I’m unwilling… I’m unwilling to accept this fate…

The barrage of thousands of swords had left the wolf demon’s body mutilated beyond recognition. However, as a Nascent Soul-level entity, its soul was unnaturally resilient. Even with its body destroyed, it clung stubbornly to life.

“Retrieve!”

With a wave of his hand, Xiao Yu summoned back the sword wheel. The massive construct rapidly compressed, ceasing its intricate interplay of Two Forces and Four Forms until it finally dissolved into the Pure Yang Sword and Nine Suns Ruler, which then returned to his storage pouch.

While the Empty Bright and Illusory Void Sword was overwhelmingly powerful, its energy consumption was immense. Xiao Yu decided against wasting further energy on the dying creature.

Floating before the wolf demon’s broken form, Xiao Yu addressed it with cold authority.

“Moon-Devouring Emperor, there’s something I don’t understand. If you can give me a proper answer, I might consider granting you a swift end.”

The wolf demon, weakened from excessive blood loss, slumped onto the clouds, its voice faint but laced with venom.

“Human brat… You must be wondering how I broke the formation after it was reinforced, right?”

Xiao Yu nodded silently, his gaze unwavering.

“Do you really think I’d tell you after what you’ve done to me?”

The wolf demon’s lips twisted into a mocking sneer, defiance blazing in its dimming eyes. It despised humans above all else and would rather die than aid one.

“If you think you’ve suffered enough, I assure you—it can get worse.”

Xiao Yu’s expression darkened as he retrieved the Myriad Beast Cauldron from his storage pouch. This supreme-grade artifact, a treasure capable of incinerating even Nascent Soul-level beings, loomed ominously before the wolf demon.

“Humans… You think I’m a monster? Let me tell you this—you humans are more ruthless than wolves, more venomous than snakes, and more cunning than foxes!”

With these scathing words, the Moon-Devouring Emperor summoned its last vestiges of strength. Its hind legs trembled as they struggled to support its weight, while its front legs clawed at the air. Slowly, painfully, the massive beast forced itself upright.

“Moon-Devouring Emperor, this is your final chance. Will you speak, or won’t you?”

Xiao Yu’s voice was as sharp as the blade in his hand, his patience wearing thin.

Ignoring the question, the wolf demon raised its head high, staring defiantly at the moon above. Its throat released a blood-curdling howl, resonating with sorrow and fury. The sound reverberated through the heavens, a primal lament that shook the clouds.

This was a wolf’s nature—unyielding, fierce, and proud.

Even in the face of death, it refused to bow or beg for mercy.

This was the unrelenting spirit of the wolf clan.

This was the essence of wolfkind.

After its mournful cry, the Moon-Devouring Emperor finally ran out of strength. Its immense body plummeted from the clouds, lifeless and drained of vitality.

“Retrieve!”

Xiao Yu activated the Myriad Beast Cauldron, drawing the wolf demon’s body inside. With millennia of cultivation behind it, the beast’s remains were a treasure trove of rare resources. Most precious of all was its demon core—a supreme material for crafting elixirs.

Ding!

“Moon-Devouring Emperor slain. Target successfully subdued. +800 luck points.”

The familiar chime of the system rang in Xiao Yu’s ears, bringing a satisfied smile to his face. Mounting the Light Feather Sword, he descended back to the Iron Pillar Temple, landing lightly in the courtyard of Songhe Pavilion.

“Immortal!”

The old abbot and his disciples rushed toward him, their faces painted with relief and gratitude.

Although they had observed the battle from the ground, the thick layer of clouds had obscured their view. All they had to go by were the deafening crashes from above, which painted a picture of a fierce and dangerous confrontation.

Xiao Yu’s calm smile reassured them.

“I’m fine. The Moon-Devouring Emperor is dead, and the Iron Pillar Temple is safe.”

“Wonderful! That’s marvellous news!”

The old abbot broke into a wide grin, while the disciples cheered with unrestrained joy. Generations of their temple had lived in fear of the wolf demon’s wrath. Now, that shadow was finally lifted.

However, Xiao Yu’s expression grew pensive.

“Before it died, the Moon-Devouring Emperor said something peculiar. It claimed that humans present a harmonious facade but secretly scheme and betray one another. I can’t shake the feeling that it was hinting at something…”
